Creative fatigue follows a predictable pattern: the ad works, then it works slightly less well, then it works a lot less well, then it actively repels people. The trick is catching it at the "slightly less well" stage — before you've burned budget against declining returns.
The frequency threshold
There's no universal frequency number at which fatigue sets in. It depends on your audience size, your market, and how distinctive your creative is. But the pattern is recognizable:
Frequency 1.0-2.0: normal performance. The ad is reaching people for the first or second time. Response is driven by a mix of novelty and relevance.
Frequency 2.0-3.5: the testing zone. Some audiences start showing fatigue here. Others don't. The signal to watch is not absolute performance — it's the trend. Is performance declining as frequency rises? If yes, fatigue is beginning.
Frequency 3.5-5.0: fatigue territory for most advertisers. The people who were going to convert already did. The people seeing it now have seen it before and didn't act. Each additional impression costs the same but returns less.
Frequency 5.0+: brand damage territory. People aren't just ignoring the ad — they're developing negative associations with it. The creative isn't just fatigued. It's counterproductive.
Early warning signals
Before ROAS drops, other metrics shift:
CTR decline without CPC increase. The same people are being shown the ad, but they're clicking less. They've seen it. The novelty premium is gone. This is the earliest reliable signal.
Hook rate decline in the first three seconds. Even before people decide whether to engage, they're recognizing the ad and scrolling faster. The brain processes familiar stimuli differently — it allocates less attention — and this shows up in view rates before it shows up in conversions.
Increased negative feedback. Hidden in your Meta ads reporting is a "quality ranking" metric that includes negative feedback signals. When it drops, people are actively hiding or reporting your ad. By the time this happens, fatigue is already advanced.
Audience saturation percentage. What portion of your target audience has seen the ad at least once? Above 60-70% reach within your target segment, fatigue accelerates — there aren't enough fresh eyes left.
Refresh vs. replace
When fatigue hits, you have two options: refresh the creative or replace it entirely.
Refresh: change one element — the hook, the thumbnail, the first three seconds. Leave the core creative intact. This works when the concept is sound but the audience has habituated to the specific opening. A refreshed hook can buy you another 1.5-2.0 frequency points of decent performance.
Replace: retire the ad and launch a new concept. This is necessary when the core creative idea has been fully exploited — everyone who would respond to this angle already has. No amount of hook tweaking brings back novelty when the underlying message is exhausted.
The most common mistake: refreshing when you should replace. Teams tweak the hook three times, watching performance degrade further each time, because they're attached to a concept that's done. If a refresh doesn't produce at least a temporary performance recovery, the concept is spent. Move on.
The hedgehog vs. the fox approach
Some teams run one ad until it fatigues, then replace it. This is the hedgehog — one sharp spike, then decline, then a new spike, then decline. The performance graph looks like a sawtooth.
Other teams run multiple ads simultaneously at lower budgets, rotating them before any single ad reaches the fatigue threshold. This is the fox — no single spike as high, but the aggregate performance is smoother and more predictable.
Both work. The hedgehog approach extracts maximum value from each creative but creates boom-bust cycles. The fox approach sacrifices peak efficiency for stability. Which you choose depends on whether your business needs predictability or can tolerate volatility in exchange for higher peaks.
Building a fatigue monitoring system
The minimum viable system:
- Track frequency per ad, weekly
- Track CTR trend per ad, weekly
- Set a frequency threshold at which you proactively prepare a refresh (for most advertisers, 3.0 is a reasonable trigger)
- Set a performance threshold at which you kill the ad regardless of frequency (if ROAS drops below target for two consecutive weeks, the ad is done)
The system doesn't need to be complex. It needs to be followed. Most teams know their ads are fatiguing and keep spending anyway because the replacement isn't ready. The fix isn't better detection — it's having the next ad ready before the current one dies.
