Survey-based ad testing — also called copy testing — has been the standard for decades. Show an ad to a panel of consumers, ask them questions about recall, persuasion, and purchase intent, and benchmark the results against category norms. It's established, it's validated, and it's limited in ways that matter.

What surveys measure

Survey-based testing measures conscious attitudes. What people say they think, feel, and intend after watching an ad. The metrics — recall, persuasion, brand linkage, purchase intent — are all self-report measures. They measure what people can articulate, not what their brains actually did.

The problem with this, covered in detail in our article on why surveys get video wrong, is that people don't have conscious access to most of what drives their response to advertising. Attention, emotional engagement, and memory encoding all operate largely below awareness. When you ask someone to report on these processes, they confabulate — they generate plausible explanations for their own behavior that feel true but are often wrong.

Surveys are good at measuring message comprehension and brand linkage — things people can consciously report. They're weak at measuring attention, emotional response, and non-conscious memory — things that drive behavior but elude introspection.

What Wreltik measures

Wreltik measures predicted neural and cognitive responses: attention, emotional intensity, cognitive load, memory encoding likelihood. These are derived from models trained on actual brain data, not from self-report. They measure what the brain is likely doing, not what the viewer says the brain was doing.

The advantage: these measures are closer to the mechanisms that actually drive behavior. Emotional engagement and memory encoding correlate with purchase behavior in ways that stated purchase intent often doesn't.

The limitation: they're predictions, not measurements. Wreltik doesn't scan anyone's brain. It predicts what brain scans would likely show based on features of the creative. The predictions are informed by real neuroscience data but are still inferences from the creative to the response, not direct observation of the response.

The speed and cost difference

A typical survey-based copy test with a sample of 200 respondents takes 1-3 weeks and costs $3,000-$10,000 per ad tested. You get conscious-response data from real people, with all the strengths and weaknesses that implies.

Wreltik delivers results in minutes at a fraction of the cost per ad. You don't get real-person data, but you get predictions informed by neuroscience models that capture things real people can't report.

The speed difference changes how you use the tool. Survey testing is for final validation — you test one version before a major spend commitment because each test is slow and expensive. Wreltik is for iterative optimization — you test multiple versions during the creative process because each test is fast and cheap.

When to use which

Use survey testing when you need:

  • Message comprehension data (did they understand what we were saying?)
  • Brand linkage data (do they remember it was our ad?)
  • Category benchmarking (how does this ad compare to norms for the category?)

Use Wreltik when you need:

  • Fast iteration during the creative process
  • Attention and engagement data that doesn't depend on self-report
  • Cost-effective testing of multiple creative variants

Use both when you need:
