Movie and game trailers are a specialized form of advertising with their own rules. What neuroscience tells us about building anticipation and driving opening weekend.

Entertainment marketing operates under different constraints than product advertising. You're not selling something the viewer can buy and use immediately. You're selling anticipation — the expectation of a future experience. The neuroscience of anticipation is different from the neuroscience of desire, and trailers that understand this outperform trailers that don't.

The dopamine does most of the work

Dopamine isn't the pleasure chemical. It's the anticipation chemical. Dopamine spikes not when you get something good, but when you expect something good. The spike is larger when the reward is uncertain — when there's a possibility of something great but no guarantee.

Trailers exploit this by showing just enough to create expectation without satisfying it. The best trailers create a question the viewer wants answered, a moment they want to see in context, a feeling they want to experience fully. The trailer is the promise. The movie is the fulfillment. The dopamine is in the gap.

Trailers that show too much — revealing plot twists, showing the best jokes, resolving the central question — reduce anticipation by eliminating uncertainty. The viewer doesn't need to see the movie because the trailer already delivered the payoff.

The musical architecture of anticipation

Trailer music follows a specific structure that maps to the neuroscience of anticipation: slow build, rhythmic acceleration, crescendo, abrupt silence or bass drop, title card. This structure isn't arbitrary. It's designed to create a physiological arousal curve that peaks at the moment the title appears.

The crescendo creates rising tension. The silence creates a prediction error — the brain expected the music to resolve, and the absence of resolution is more attention-capturing than any sound could be. The title appearing during the silence gets the full weight of undivided attention.

Trailers that deviate from this structure are making a deliberate choice — usually to signal that the film is unconventional. The structure is effective because it's neurologically optimized. Deviating from it is artistically valid but neurologically costly.

The ensemble vs. the premise

Entertainment marketers face a strategic choice: sell the premise or sell the cast?

Premise-driven trailers work for original IP where the concept is the hook. The trailer needs to communicate "this is something you haven't seen before" in under 30 seconds. The premise is the star.

Cast-driven trailers work for established franchises or star vehicles where the audience's existing relationship with the talent is the primary draw. The trailer just needs to signal "more of what you already like."

The mistake is leading with premise when the audience is coming for the cast, or leading with cast when the audience doesn't know or care who's in it. This is the same mistake brands make when they lead with features (premise) for audiences that need emotional connection first, or lead with emotion (cast) for audiences that need to understand what the product does.

Testing trailers

Trailers are ads for movies. They can be tested like ads. Wreltik's dimensions are especially relevant:

  • Visual Attention: is the trailer visually engaging, or does it feel like a montage of disconnected scenes?
  • Emotional Resonance: does the trailer create feeling, or is it just information about a plot?
  • Reward Response: does the trailer build anticipation without satisfying it? Too little Reward Response means the trailer didn't create desire. Too much means it gave everything away.

Test the trailer against the same trailer with a different opening five seconds, a different music track, or a different ending sequence. The structure of anticipation can be optimized like any other creative variable.
