Cognitive load is how hard the brain has to work to process what's on screen. Too much load, and the viewer's processing capacity is exceeded. When that happens, they don't try harder — they disengage. The ad didn't fail because it was bad. It failed because it was too much work.
The limited capacity of working memory
Working memory — the system that holds and manipulates information in the moment — has a capacity of roughly four chunks of information at once. A "chunk" can be a word, an image, a sound, a number, or any meaningful unit. Once working memory is full, new information displaces old information.
In a video ad, every element consumes working memory capacity: the visuals, the spoken words, the on-screen text, the music, the emotional tone. If your ad has a talking head, text overlays, background music, a product demo, and a voiceover — all in the first five seconds — the viewer's working memory is overwhelmed. They won't process all of it. They'll process almost none of it.
The practical rule: one primary piece of information at a time. If the voiceover is delivering a key point, the text on screen should reinforce it, not add new information. If the visual is complex, the audio should be simple. The best ads feel simple not because they're unsophisticated, but because they respect the limits of the viewer's processing capacity.
What increases cognitive load
Visual complexity. Cluttered frames. Multiple focal points competing for attention. Background detail that doesn't serve the message. The brain has to work to figure out where to look, and that work consumes capacity that could be used for message processing.
Information density. Too many facts, features, or arguments too quickly. Each new piece of information demands processing, and the brain can only process so fast. Information delivered faster than the brain can process doesn't get processed faster — it gets dropped.
Incongruence between audio and visual. When the spoken words and the visual image don't match, the brain has to reconcile them. That reconciliation is work. Incongruence can be used deliberately for creative effect — surprise, humor — but it costs attention. When used accidentally, it just costs.
Reading while listening. If the viewer is reading on-screen text while different words are being spoken, both streams compete for the same processing channel. The viewer will either read or listen. They won't do both well.
Fast pacing without structure. Fast cuts create attention resets, which are good — but only if the content across cuts is connected. Fast cuts through unrelated content create the experience of channel-surfing, which is cognitively exhausting.
What reduces it
Simplicity of composition. One focal point. Clean backgrounds. Limited color palette. The visual equivalent of writing short sentences.
Redundancy between channels. Text on screen that matches the spoken words. Visuals that illustrate what the voiceover is saying. Redundancy isn't boring — it's efficient. The brain processes redundant information across channels with less effort than non-redundant information.
Pacing that respects processing time. A beat between important points. A visual held long enough to register. Editing that gives the viewer time to understand before moving on.
Structure that's predictable in the right way. A clear arc. A known format. When the viewer knows what kind of content they're watching, the brain doesn't have to work to figure out the structure. It can focus on the content.
Measuring cognitive load
In practice, you don't need EEG to estimate cognitive load. Watch your ad once. Look away. Try to recall the three main points. If you can't — if the ad left you with a general impression but no specific recall — the cognitive load was probably too high. Your brain processed the feeling of the ad but dropped the content because there wasn't enough capacity.
A more rigorous approach: show the ad to five people. Ask each one what they remember. If the answers are inconsistent — five different takeaways from the same ad — the ad is trying to say too much. The brain picks what it can process and discards the rest. Different brains pick different things. The result is an ad that communicates nothing consistently.
