Priming is the phenomenon where exposure to one stimulus influences the response to a subsequent stimulus. In advertising, it means the content surrounding your ad changes how the ad is processed. The same creative, placed in different contexts, produces different neural responses.

How priming works

When the brain processes information, it activates associated concepts, emotions, and memories. These activations persist briefly — seconds to minutes — and influence the processing of whatever comes next. If the viewer just watched emotional content, their brain is in an emotional processing mode. Your ad, arriving immediately after, gets processed through that emotional lens.

This happens automatically, below conscious awareness. The viewer doesn't think "I was just watching an emotional video, so now I'll process this ad emotionally." Their brain simply processes the ad differently because the relevant neural networks are already activated.

Platform context as priming

Each platform primes viewers differently:

  • TikTok: entertainment mode. The brain is expecting content that's fast, engaging, emotionally varied. Ads that match this expectation get processed fluently. Ads that feel like traditional advertising get rejected.
  • LinkedIn: professional evaluation mode. The brain is in analysis and credibility-assessment mode. Ads that provide substantive information get processed seriously. Ads that try to entertain get processed as contextually inappropriate.
  • YouTube: lean-back consumption mode. The brain is prepared for longer engagement with chosen content. Ads that respect this — that don't feel like interruptions — get more attention.

Strategic priming

You can use priming deliberately:

  • If your ad uses humor, placing it near content that's already put the viewer in a positive mood amplifies the humor's effect.
  • If your ad makes a logical argument, placing it near content that's activated the viewer's analytical thinking improves message processing.
  • If your ad relies on emotional storytelling, placing it near content that's already opened an emotional channel increases transportation.

The practical challenge: you don't always control placement. Platform algorithms decide where your ad appears. But understanding priming explains variance in performance that creative quality alone can't explain. The same ad performing differently on different days, in different placements, in different platform contexts — this isn't random noise. It's priming.

The ad-sequence priming opportunity

Retargeting sequences are the most controllable form of priming. The first ad primes the viewer for the second. If ad one introduces a problem and ad two presents the solution, the viewer processes ad two differently than if they'd seen it cold. The problem is already activated in their neural networks. The solution feels more relevant.

The sequence structure should match the natural progression of neural activation: awareness before consideration, consideration before conversion. Ads shown out of sequence — a conversion ad to someone who hasn't been primed with awareness — feel jarring. The brain hasn't been prepared for the ask.
