Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring content so that AI-powered search engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude — cite your brand in their synthesized answers. It's the newest branch of search optimization, and it's different enough from traditional SEO to require its own approach.

What's actually happening

When someone asks an AI search engine a question, the system typically uses Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG): it searches an index for relevant content, retrieves the most relevant sources, and generates an answer that synthesizes those sources. Your content is one of potentially dozens of sources the AI considers. Whether it gets cited depends on how well it's structured for extraction and how authoritative the AI judges it to be.

The scale is significant. By early 2026, roughly 1.13 billion AI referral visits were occurring monthly — a 357% year-over-year increase. About 60% of Google searches now end without a click to a traditional result. AI is handling an estimated 12-18% of English-language informational queries. These numbers are growing, not shrinking.

How GEO differs from traditional SEO

Traditional SEO optimizes for placement in a list of links. GEO optimizes for extraction into a synthesized answer. The differences are practical:

Citation structure matters more than keyword density. AI engines extract passages, not pages. A well-structured article that states its answer clearly in the first 40-80 words is more likely to be cited than one that buries the answer in the fifth paragraph. Research shows roughly 44% of AI citations are pulled from the first 30% of a page.

Authority signals beyond your domain matter enormously. About 82% of links cited by AI engines come from earned media — publications, Wikipedia, Reddit, G2, YouTube — not from brand-owned pages. Your content on your site is one signal. Your brand's presence across the broader web is a stronger one.

Statistics and named sources get cited disproportionately. Content that includes specific data, named studies, dates, and direct quotations can see citation rate improvements of 30-40% compared to content that makes claims without attribution. AI engines weight verifiability heavily.

Whether you need it right now

If you're a B2B company whose customers use search to research solutions, or a publisher whose business depends on search traffic, GEO is worth attention now. The shift is real and accelerating. Early investment in AI visibility builds compounding advantages that will be harder to replicate as the space matures.

If you're a local business or an ecommerce brand where most search traffic is navigational or transactional rather than informational, traditional SEO is still your primary concern. AI engines are handling informational queries. They're not yet the primary channel for "plumber near me" or "buy running shoes."

The practical first step: make sure AI crawlers can access your site. Many sites accidentally block them. Check your robots.txt for GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended. If they're blocked, your content can't be cited regardless of how good it is.
