What "ROI" means for pre-testing
You cannot measure the return on a prediction tool the way you measure ad spend, because the return is avoided waste. It is creative that never ships, or ships improved. That makes ROI an estimate, built from assumptions, not a tracked metric.
That is fine, as long as the assumptions are yours and stated. The framework is three inputs:
- Media spend per creative piece. What it costs you to distribute one video ad or reel.
- Failure rate. The share of creative that underperforms after launch, based on your own history.
- Catch rate. The share of underperformers you believe pre-testing can flag before you scale spend on them. A conservative number is better than an optimistic one, because predictions are not guarantees.
The test pays when: test cost < media spend × failure rate × catch rate.
A worked example
These numbers are assumptions for illustration, not statistics. Replace them with your own.
Assume you spend $500 distributing each video ad, and one in three pieces of creative underperforms. Expected waste per piece: about $167. If pre-testing catches half of those weak pieces before they scale, expected savings per piece: about $83. Against a test that costs a few dollars, that ratio is the case for testing.
Run the same numbers for a creator posting Reels: $50 of promotion per reel, one in five underperforms, catch rate of half. Expected savings per reel: about $5, against a test that costs roughly the same. Now the decision is close, and the answer is to test selectively: the hooks and thumbnails you reuse across formats, not every post.
When the math flips
The framework stops favoring testing when any input shrinks:
- Low media spend per piece. At very small budgets the protected amount is smaller than the test price.
- Low failure rate. If your creative rarely underperforms, there is less waste to catch.
- High test price relative to spend. This is where per-test pricing matters: a $5 test and a $50 test give different answers to the same question.
- No distribution. Without media spend there is nothing to protect.
