Sound is the most neglected dimension of video advertising. Teams obsess over visuals — the grade, the composition, the talent, the text overlay — and treat audio as an afterthought. The research suggests this is backwards. Sound often does more emotional work than picture.
Sound and emotion
The auditory system has a direct line to the amygdala, the brain's emotional processing center. Visual information takes a longer path through the cortex before reaching emotion centers. Sound gets there faster.
This means audio can create emotional responses before the viewer has consciously processed what they're seeing. A musical swell, a change in voice tone, a sudden silence — these register emotionally before the visual context catches up. The emotional frame is set by the ears, not the eyes.
The practical implication: if your ad's emotional arc depends entirely on visuals, you're missing the fastest path to emotional engagement. Music and sound design shouldn't support the visual. They should lead it.
Voice as an instrument
The human voice is the most attention-capturing sound in the auditory environment. The brain has dedicated processing regions for speech that activate automatically when a voice is detected. This is why Emplifi's 2025 study found that human speech in the first three seconds of a Reel improved 10-second retention by 25% compared to music-led openings.
Voice quality matters more than most advertisers acknowledge. A voice that sounds like every other ad voiceover — the anonymous, slightly enthusiastic, "professional" tone that dominates advertising — gets processed as background noise. A voice that sounds like a specific person talking about something they genuinely care about gets processed as communication.
The casting of voiceover talent is worth as much attention as the casting of on-screen talent. The right voice makes the same words more persuasive, more memorable, and more trusted.
Music and memory
Music is a powerful memory cue, but it's subject to a specific constraint: the music has to be distinctive to function as a retrieval cue. Generic stock music — the kind that sounds like "upbeat corporate" or "inspirational piano" — is too similar to every other ad's music to serve as a unique memory tag.
Distinctive music, whether it's an original composition or a recognizable licensed track, can dramatically improve brand recall. The music becomes associated with the brand through repeated exposure, and hearing the music — even without the ad — activates the brand memory.
Sonic branding — a distinctive audio logo or sound mark — works on the same principle. Intel's five-note chime. Netflix's "ta-dum." These are short, distinctive, and consistently paired with the brand. Over time, the sound alone activates the brand association. This is classical conditioning at commercial scale.
Sound design for silent viewing
The 85% silent-viewing statistic creates a paradox: sound is enormously powerful, and most viewers will never hear it. The resolution isn't to ignore sound. It's to design for both modes.
The audio experience should be rich enough that the minority who hear it get a meaningfully better experience. The visual experience should be complete enough that the majority who don't hear it still understand and engage. Neither mode should feel like an afterthought.
Practically, this means:
- Captions that communicate not just words but tone and emphasis
- Visual pacing that works without music
- Emotional beats that are visible on faces, not just audible in voices
- Audio that rewards the sound-on viewer without punishing the sound-off one
